Float It Up on National Root Beer Float Day

Tuesday, Aug. 6 is National Root Beer Float Day. Will you make your own at home, or stop by Fitz's? Either way, here are 5 things to know.

Root beer floats are just as American and representative of summer as shorts apple pie and barbecues. To celebrate National Root Beer Float Day, here a few things you should know about root beer.

  1. An early version of root beer was made by colonial settlers. Called small beer, it was consumed soon after bottling, so it didn't have time to ferment and turn as alcoholic as regular beer.Β
  2. Fitz's all started in 1947 in Richmond Heights at a drive-in hamburger place with a secret root beer recipe.
  3. On Aug. 19, 1893 the first root beer float was reportedly served in Cripple Creek, CO. Frank J. Wisner, who owned Cripple Creek Brewing, was inspired to create the treat by the way the moon shined on snowcapped Cow Mountain.
  4. Clint Eastwood has been spotted wearing a root beer Rolex in multiple film roles. Click here to find out what a root beer Rolex is.
  5. In 1984, the arcade game "Root Beer Tapper," in which the player must serve the title beverage to bar patrons, was released.Β
