Mock Roundabout Asphalt, Curbing to Start Next Week
The new trial traffic design will help the city determine if a roundabout would help traffic flow in the historic plaza area.

The City of University City will install asphalt curbing and pavement markings the week of July 15 for theΒ mock roundabout at the intersection of Delmar Blvd. and Trinity Ave.Β
Traffic control will be provided during the installation of the asphalt curb and pavement markings and signs. Left-turns will be restricted at the intersection for workerβs safety.Β
According to the city, the purpose of the temporaryΒ roundabout is to evaluate the effectiveness of a proposed permanent roundabout at this intersection. The new alignment will serveΒ the followingΒ Β purposes:Β
- Improve traffic operations for northbound and southbound left turning vehicles from Trinity Avenue
- Improve safety for pedestrians and bicycles by calmingΒ traffic as it enters the Delmar Loop to limit speed to 15 mph at the roundabout, andΒ
- To decrease confusion caused by the existing eight leg intersection.Β
Concrete planters and reflective safety barrels will be placed in the inner circle of the roundabout. New pavement markings and signs also will be added to guide pedestrian and vehicle traffic.Β
The mock roundabout will be up for at least 30 days while the city evaluates traffic and pedestrian safety. The results will be given to city officials so that a determination may be made on the construction of a permanent roundabout.Β
Roundabout DrivingΒ Safety Tips
- As you approach the roundabout, you will see a sign "roundabout ahead" sign with an advisory speed limit for the roundabout.
- Slow down as you approach the roundabout, and watch for pedestrians in the crosswalk.
- Continue toward the roundabout and look to your left as you near the yield sign and dashed yield line at the entrance to the roundabout. Yield to traffic already in the roundabout.
- Once you see a gap in traffic, enter the circle and proceed to your exit. If there is no traffic in the roundabout, you may enter without yielding.
- Look for pedestrians and use your turn signal before you exit, and make sure to stay in your lane as you navigate the roundabout.
- Pedestrians shall use the marked crosswalks at the four (4) legs of the intersection to cross Delmar Boulevard and Trinity Avenue.Β
