U. City Will Collect Bikes For Kids At Annual Community Yard Sale

The city is partnering with St. Louis Bicycle Works to collect bikes for kids across the St. Louis area.

UNIVERSITY CITY, MO β€” University City will hold its annual community yard sale later this month, but this year officials say it will be more than just a yard sale. Centennial Commons, the city's recreational center, is partnering with St. Louis Bicycle works to host a bike drive during the yard sale to collect adult-sized and kid-sized bikes from members of the community. The donated bikes will go to local children and young adults as part of St. Louis Bicycle Works' Earn-a-Bike program.

Participants of the program can learn about bike safety and maintenance as they also practice creative thinking, group problem solving and learn responsibility, according to the company's website. After completing the program, the participants will receive a free bike, helmet, light and lock.

β€œWe think Earn-a-Bike is such a valuable tool, and we saw so many kids benefit from the program at our facility," Centennial Common’s recreation supervisor Stephanie Perry said in a statement. "We want to do our part in ensuring other kids also have the opportunity to set goals and reach them."

β€œWe really look forward to the resource fair and yard sale every year because it brings together everyone who makes University City such a fun city," said deputy director of recreation Lynda Euell-Taylor in a statement. "We see students and families, residents and non-residents, those looking to find the right organization to volunteer with and those hunting for a special antique item. It is exciting and inspiring to see all of these people come out to Heman for this event.”
