University City Mayor Shelley Welsch Will Not Seek Re-election

Welsch has served two terms as University City's Mayor. She will not seek a third.

UNIVERSITY CITY, MO — Mayor Shelley Welsch quashed rumors of a third mayoral campaign over the weekend — just days before the filing deadline — when she announced in her weekly newsletter that she will not run again.

"In all three of my mayoral campaigns, I made a commitment to the voters of University City to serve only two terms," Welsch said. "And importantly, I made that same commitment to my family and to myself."

Welsch said she was anxious to return to private life, pick up old projects she'd put on hold, and look for ways to benefit the wider St. Louis region.

"I have been actively involved in University City since the mid-nineties when I left ABC Network News, and was no longer connected to a beeper (remember them?) 24/7," Welsch continued. "I'm extremely gratified by what we've been able to accomplish together."

She promised a look back on her time as mayor in a future newsletter.
