Prompted by the rapid change in China, the author decided to document her childhood in China since the new generations would not have a similar experience. For a long time, China was very closed to the outside world but that didn't stop the rapid change that took place in the 1970's after the death of Mao.
The Cultural Revolution ended and many old traditions had been rooted out. The author's experience was one of transition...unlike her parent's, the new China was opening up to the world culturally and economically. Here is a child's view of how things were transitioning.
