Vernon's BBQ Closes Shop
The U-City barbecue joint closed Monday, despite being recently featured on Food Network and boasting some of the best food in St. Louis.
UNIVERSITY CITY, MO — Vernon's BBQ and Catering is closing up shop, reportedly due to a dispute with the restaurant's landlord. Matt Stiffelman and Tim Zolman opened the Vernon Avenue barbecue joint in 2012, just a few blocks over from the Delmar Loop, and the restaurant quickly gained a national reputation.
Last year, Stiffelman and Zolman won a kosher barbecue contest in Dallas, Texas, and in December their restaurant was featured in an episode of "Eat Sleep BBQ" on Food Network.
A sign posted on the door of the restaurant Wednesday read: "We're sorry. Vernon's BBQ is closed. It has been an honor serving our amazing customers. Thank you."
