You Light It, We Write It: U. City Police Crack Down On Fireworks

Did you know fireworks are illegal in University City?

UNIVERSITY CITY, MO β€” You couldn't necessarily tell from all the cracks and booms just after sundown in recent days, but consumer fireworks are illegal in University City, and police say they are cracking down.

Fireworks are responsible for more than 11,000 injuries every year, with children younger than 15 suffering almost a third of those. Fireworks also pollute the air and water, and the noise can scare pets and distress veterans suffering from PTSD, the police department wrote on Facebook.

Police say they will be out enforcing the city's fireworks ban this year, and anyone caught with fireworks could face up to a $1,000 fine.

β€œIndividuals caught discharging fireworks within the University City limits are subject to prosecution under our municipal ordinance," said Chief Larry Hampton. "Professional displays of fireworks are family friendly fun events and should be enjoyed at a designated safe location.”

The municipal code not only bans the discharging of fireworks, but also their possession, manufacturing, storage and handling.
