Young Artists Shine in Final U City Symphony Concert

The University City Symphony Orchestra held its final performance of the 2012-13 season Sunday.

TheΒ University City Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Leon Burke III, held its final concert of the 2012-13 season Sunday atΒ All Saints ChurchΒ in University City.

The Symphony selections included Aaron Copland’sΒ Appalachian SpringΒ and William Schatzkamer’sΒ March of the Sabra. The winners of the 2013 William Schatzkamer Young Artists Competition also performed.

  • Emily DeBold, viola;
  • Daniel Fan, marimba;
  • Emily Spaugh, clarinet; and
  • Hava Polinsky, violin.

The competition for young artists is named forΒ William Schatzkamer, the first music director and conductor of the University City Symphony who served in the position for more than 35 years.Β He died last year at the age of 96.Β 

Schatzkamer had a long and distinguished musical career as a concert pianist, teacher and conductor. He was on the faculty ofΒ Washington UniversityΒ for many years and also was the music director and a founder of theΒ Gateway Festival Orchestra.Β
