St. Charles County Mails Out Tax Bills Nov. 28

Personal property and real estate tax bills will be mailed out Nov. 28, said Michelle McBride, St. Charles County Collector of Revenue.

“When tax bills arrive, please look at the list of political subdivisions that receive the taxes you pay,” McBride said, according to a news release.

“The bills detail the allocation of tax to the state, schools, cities, fire districts, library, ambulance, dispatch and alarm, road and bridge, developmental disabilities resource board, drainage and levee districts, community improvement districts (CID), neighborhood improvement districts (NID), and various other funds," she said.

“The county does not retain all of the money paid in as tax,” McBride said.

Each of the entities that receive a portion of the tax bill sets its own tax levy, known as the tax rate. The collector’s office is given the tax bills to collect and is responsible for distributing the taxes collected to the political subdivisions.

The assets listed on personal property bills should include everything owned on Jan. 1 of the tax year.

All real estate owners should receive a tax statement. Taxing services and mortgage companies also receive the Collector’s electronic bill file. Payment of the full tax amount is the responsibility of the current owner (either personally or from their escrow account).

Payments for 2011 taxes received on or after Jan. 1, 2012, are subject to late payment penalty and interest as required by state law. Pay your taxes early to avoid any last minute issues. The St. Charles County Administration Building will be closed on Saturday, Dec. 31.

Tax payments are accepted in person from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday thru Friday, at the County Administration Building, 201 North Second Street in St. Charles, Mo., 63301.

Mailed payments are credited as of the U.S. Post Office postmark date. Online bill payments made via bank websites often take 5 to 10 days, so this should be done by Dec. 20 to ensure you pay by Dec. 31.

A drop box is on North Second Street in front of the County Administration Building. The contents are removed at least once a day. Checks should be made payable to Michelle D. McBride, St. Charles County Collector.
