The Commuter Nightmare: How Bad Is It for Wentzville Commuters?

Wentzville commuters have an average of eight more minutes on the road than drivers from St. Charles.

The U.S. Census Bureau says the average commute for American drivers is between 25 and 26 minutes. But if you're from Wentzville, it's likely a few minutes more.

That's according to Slate, which says it takes Wentzville drivers an average of 29.7 minutes to get to work. A map on the Slate allows readers to enter a zip code and find out the average commute from their area.

Lake Saint Louis commuters are also above the national average at 27.6 minutes.

In May 2011, Slate published a story called "Your Commute is Killing You," which revealed the following facts, gleaned from university studies and scientific research:

  • Divorce is 40 percent more likely when one partner has a daily commute of more than 45 minutes
  • Long-distance commuters suffer "disproportionate pain, stress, obesity, and dissatisfaction"
  • The length of a commute to work affects people more than the length of the work day itself
