Jim Sears is an Emeritus Professor of Geology at the University of Montana, where he taught for 39 years. His long-term research explored the surprising relationship between Siberia and the Rocky Mountains. Jim proposed that continental drift separated Siberia from the Rockies during Paleozoic time—an idea he tested through three river-rafting expeditions into the Siberian wilderness with his son, Robert, and Russian colleagues.
Their discoveries supported his theory, and he is now writing a book about those bold adventures. Jim’s career has taken him from the Grand Canyon to the Selkirk Mountains and deep into Siberia’s wild river systems—all in pursuit of understanding Earth's ancient past.
