LINCOLN — Fans of “Cameron the Capitol Cat,” a feline fixture at the south entrance to the State Capitol, are calling for his return after he was reportedly taken away Tuesday night by two women in their 20s.
State Sen. Anna Wishart of Lincoln tweeted Wednesday morning that Cameron was last spotted at 8 p.m. Tuesday being taken away in a carrier by two women who walked away with him.

Cameron is a fixture at the State Capitol, often greeting workers at the south entrance as they arrive in the morning and leave at night.
He has his own Facebook page, fan club and Twitter account. State Capitol workers often bring him treats.
Initial speculation is that someone mistakenly thought Cameron was a stray and took him to domesticate him.
“He’s clearly a domesticated cat,” Wishart said. “Hopefully whoever took him was a mistake.”
A post Wednesday on Cameron’s Facebook page said he is microchipped and has a guardian who adopted him from the Capital Humane Society about seven years ago, when he was about four months old.
“Cameron has enjoyed spending a lot of time at the Capitol meeting and greeting his friends and fans,” the post stated.
Wishart, in her tweet, asked whoever took him to return him.
