5 Things: BAE Systems Announces Layoffs In New Hampshire

You can't stop an avalanche as it races down the Patch.

1. Weather Report: Today will be mostly cloudy with a high of 40 degrees. Tonight will bring showers and a 33 degrees low. It will be cloudier and warmer tomorrow.

2. Cutting down. BAE Systems is cutting 300 of its 11,000 employees, most of which are coming for its Southern NH locations. A total of 200 employees will be laid off in our state.

3. Hot Fact! Did you know: The first microwave ovens were very different from the countertop models we're familiar with today. In 1947, the Raytheon Company's first commercial units weighed a whopping 750 pounds.

4. Gore on Tour. Former Vice President Al Gore is planning to stop by The Granite State on his book tour. He will be discussing and signing his new book titled "The Future" at the Grappone Center in Concord starting at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

5. Congrats! Jacob Charles Dworkin of Amherst has been named to the President's List at Clemson University for the fall 2012 semester. Dworkin is majoring in General Engineering. To be named to the President's List, a student must achieve a 4.0 (all As) grade-point average.
