5 Things You Need to Know Today: July 27

With a taste of your Patch, I'm on a ride. You're toxic I'm slipping under

[Your Song of the Day]

1. Your weather report: Today will have scattered storms as temperatures reach a high of 74 degrees. Isolated thunderstorms remain tonight with an overnight low of 62 degrees. Look out for more storms this weekend.

2. Watch out for scams. WMUR reports that NH officials are warning senior citizens of a phone scam that is targeting their wallets. The scammers do demographic research to pinpoint wealthier seniors and convince them to wire money.

3. Patch Fact: Did you know: Before the 1950s, there was no such thing as a filter-tipped cigarette -- or at least nobody smoked it. The idea behind the filter was to screen out tar and nicotine to make the cigarette "safer."

4. Save that money. Lifehacker has a chart of the best credit cards to use at 18 major retailers, depending on your shopping options. That way you can get the most bang for your plastic bucks.

5. Congrats! The following Amherst students were recently named to the Merrimack College Spring 2012 Semester Dean's List: Jacquelyn Jones, a Sophomore majoring in Biology and Kathryn Eagan, a Junior majoring in Civil Engineering. Dean's List students are so designated having earned a GPA of 3.5 or better based on a 4.0 GPA system.
