2. Politics for breakfast. The Amherst Republican Committee will hold their regular monthly meeting at 8 a.m. in Joey's Diner. The guest speakers will be Dan Dwyer, candidate for NH State Senate and Frank Szabo, candidate for Hillsborough County Sheriff.

3. Patch Fact: Limnology is the scientific study of lakes, streams, ponds, and other bodies of fresh water. Limnologists study the chemical and physical characteristics of these bodies of water.

4. Tree disease spreading? WMUR reports that forestry officials are concerned about a tree disease that is infecting white pine trees in New Hampshire. White pine canker has been spreading since 1997, and the New Hampshire Forest Health Program is looking into how serious the disease can be. The canker starts with a lesion on the bark, penetrating and causing dead spots that affect a tree's ability to grow.

5. Congrats! Timothy Nichols, a member of the Class of 2012 at Skidmore College, earned academic recognition at the college this spring. Nichols earned a B.A. degree summa cum laude with honor in mathematics and economics at Skidmore's 101st commencement in May. In addition, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the national honor society that exists to encourage and recognize outstanding individual achievements in liberal education. He also received the William E. Weiss Memorial Award in Economics, awarded annually to recognize outstanding accomplishment by a major or combined major in the field of economics.
