Get Lovey Dovey With Shakespeare's Sonnets At The Library

Find out what is happening at The Amherst Town Library this week.

Shakespeare's Sonnets (Friday, February 1 & Friday, February 15 from 1:00-2:30 PM) Presented by the very popular Harvard Professor Theoharis C. Theoharis, this series will include a close reading of chosen sonnets and concentrate on love as an experience and love as an idea. Using a lecture and discussion format, the Elizabethan literary conventions and Elizabethan ideas of love, along with Shakespeare's personal transformation of these things, will all be on the menu for an engaging enlightening set of programs. Theoharis will provide a wonderful background to this creative time in English Literature!   Although the series is connected in content, you are welcome to attend one or both parts. There is no required reading, yet you are welcome to check out one of the many collections of Shakespeare's Sonnets that will be on display at the Library beginning January 18. Sign up

Seeking Sponsors: The Friends of the Amherst Town Library is looking for tax-deductible donations of $100 to sponsor awards for exceptional pieces of art at the 20th annual Student Art Show held at the Amherst Town Library. The Student Art Show displays works from Amherst and for the first time Mont Vernon students (grades 1st - 12th) at the Amherst Town Library for the entire month of May. Typically there are 500 pieces of art displayed. Families of featured students are invited to a reception on Mother's Day hosted by the Friends of the Library. The reception is well attended with 700 visitors and 9,300 library patrons are estimated to view the show throughout the month of May.

New this year we would like to have 5 local artists jury student artwork submissions and select 15 pieces to receive awards. The awards would take the form of framing the artwork for 2-dimensional media or creating a plaque for 3-dimensional artwork. Businesses and local citizens sponsoring a piece of student artwork would have the opportunity to display the student's artwork they sponsored at their business during the month of June. Followed by a group show of awarded pieces at SAU-39 Superintendent's office in July. If you are able to donate or have questions, please contact Christine Farris, Friends of the Amherst Town Library Student Art Show Coordinator at Christine.Farris@mac.com
