Getting Up Offa That Thing and Out of That Funk

Looking back on one of those "blah" weeks we all get from time to time.

It was a good thing to get down with the funk in the good old days of disco and soul music. Nowadays nobody is getting with the funk on the dance floor, but it can sure be found in our moods every now and then.

This week was one of those times where it seemed like everything went wrong. Stress between work and the personal life seemed to be creeping up higher than usual. My mind was scattered and the negative vibes seeped through to the rest of the body.

It is now Friday. I had been in a funk all week, but it is finally time to use the weekend to recharge the ol’ batteries. It is even a three-day weekend (thank Zeus and the other Olympian gods for that.)

Getting into a bad funk is easy, but getting out of it is the hard part. I can feel it slowly slipping away now as I write this column (last-minute of course) and finish up work before the glorious weekend.

The problem with being in a down mood it manifests and grows within the psyche. It is not a reflection of reality, but how a darkened mind is perceiving it.

Looking back on the week things went pretty okay, but don’t tell my dumb brain that. It has been whining and moping that everything has been going wrong. That is far from the truth, although I did drop my girlfriend’s brush into the toilet this morning.

Sure things go wrong, but a calm and collected mind can brush off most anything and overcome those obstacles.

A mind that is permitted to slip into gloom sees every little problem as a huge and insurmountable one. For example, the few mistakes I made earlier this week felt like tragedies when they happened, but in reality were nothing to write home about.

This is becoming obvious now that my mind is clearing out that funky goop. Everything I’ve worried about this week was pretty much a non-problem, and all of the stresses that plagued each day could have been overcome easily. It is all about perspective.

My philosophy is to always have an arsenal of positive thinking and ideas to combat the many challenges in life.

There is no shortage of ammo because there are so many amazing things to be thankful for each day. The new Daft Punk album is out, Arrested Development is making a comeback this weekend, cookouts galore await me and I can look forward to writing more amazing stories for Patch next week. I’d call that a full clip.

In memoriam of this “No-Good Blah Week,” I am planning to move all of the funk that has built up to my feet for some sweet dance moves. These hips will refuse to lie as I bust out The Robot, The Worm and The Puppeteer. Funk belongs on the dance floor, not in a mood.

Let’s all have a funky good time.
