My Toast to George Infanti

“Hey there young man. How’s it going young man? Good to see you young man.”

Those were some of the things George Infanti would say as I walked into selectmen meetings these past few years. It was only in this short time that I got the chance to know George and the amazing effect he had on people.

That effect could be seen in the hundreds of friends and family who showed up at Centennial Park in Milford this week to celebrate his life. The sun was beating down on that hot summer day as they gathered together to remember an old friend who finally lost his battle to cancer.

I’ve covered many stories similar to this. All of them are special because the person being remembered made enough of a difference during their life to bring people together after their death.

I am among the many who admire Mr. Infanti for his contributions to the community and dedication to family. I’ve sat through hours and hours of meetings while he served as an Amherst selectman, and not once did a negative thought about the man pass my mind.

As a public figure, I saw him listen to all sides of an issue, but stand by his beliefs respectfully. He was a staunch advocate for not only the safety of his citizens, but also their well-being. George truly cared about the people that surrounded him, and there are many who can thank him for that trait.

In his final days, I was able to see the other side of Mr. Infanti. A celebration held in his honor by the Milford Rotary gave a brief glimpse into the life of a man who became an important part of his family and friends.

I had always known he was a jokester, but his friends showed me I didn’t even know the half of it. This was a man who loved to laugh and make others join in that laughter. The world could use more smiles, and George was happy to deal them out.

Men like George prove that there are so many kinds of successes to be had in life, and some people can truly reach them all.

My life has been filled with strong role models who have helped me see the opportunity and  joy in the world. I am happy to see that a man like George has been that for so many others, and an inspiration to anyone looking to add just a little more light to the world.

A toast was held in his honor this week. This "young man" will also raise a glass to a man who lived a life of accomplishment, love and laughter.

You may have left this earth, but you left your smile behind.
