Officer Home Recovering From Motorcycle Accident

Matthew Saunders was injured in a motorcycle accident on Sept. 11.

The Amherst Police officer injured when his motorcycle was struck by a car on Route 13 earlier this month is out of the hospital and at home recuperating, says Police Chief Mark Reams.

Reams said he couldn't say much more than that, but that Senior Patrolman Matthew Saunders, a 24-year veteran of the department, would be out of work for the next several weeks.

Saunders, 49, of Brookline, was off-duty and driving home from work on Sept. 11 when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a car driven by Carolye McCusker, 63, of Milford.

McCusker was attempting to turn left out of the Lull Farm farmstand on Route 13 when the collision happened. She was unhurt in the accident.

Saunders was thrown from his bike and flown by medical helicopter to UMass Medical Center in Worcester with serious injuries.

For those who've asked where they can send cards and notes of well wishes to Saunders, Reams said sending them to or dropping them off at the Police Station is the best option.

"Several people have sent cards to the police station and we get them to him when they come in," Reams said.

The Amherst Police Station is at 175 Amherst Road.
