Souhegan Opens Div. II Tournament With Upset Win

The Sabers beat Merrimack Valley Pride 3-1.

The tenth ranked Souhegan Sabers traveled to Penacook to play the seventh seed Merrimack Valley Pride and came home with a 3 to 1 victory.

Senior, lefty Connor Cinque scattered three hits, struck out four, walked five and picked off two runners to pick up his third win of the season.

In the TOP OF THE SECOND the Sabers opened the scoring ... to take a 1 to 0 lead.  Austin Cote singled, stole second base.  Michel Ehrenstein walked and Tyrell Torres rbi singled plated Austin Cote.

Tied at 1-1 in the fifth, Tyrell Torres singled (second hit of the game), Tyler Ford's double put runners on second and third with one out.  A slow rolled to first base saw Tyrell Torres break for home and slide in for the run, as the ball rolled slowly way, Seth Learned took the opportunity to go to second ... when the catcher threw to second Tyler Ford scampered home and Souhegan took a 3 to 1 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, the ride of Merrimack Valley rallied.  Rile Linehan singled and with one out Scott Schoffield was hit by a pitch.  Brady Wentworth hit a sharp ball to Tyler Ford at short who underhanded to Austin Cote at second who bared handed the ball, tagged second base and completed the double play with a strike to firstbaseman Michel Ehrenstein to complete the play and win the contest 3 to 1.

The Sabers will travel to play the number two seed Portsmouth Clippers Saturday at 4:00 pm at Portsmouth.
