Souhegan Summer Reading Book List 2013

Plenty of choices for students to choose from this summer.

(See the full 2013 Summer Reading Book List in the PDF above)

Souhegan’s goal for summer reading is to foster a life-long love of reading for pure enjoyment. After all, that is what most adults do in the summer – we all seek that perfect “beach” read – that book that transports us away from our daily lives to another world, or consumes us completely.  As incoming high schoolers, this approach to summer reading is the perfect opportunity to foster adult habits for reading.

Before they leave for the summer, students will have an opportunity to select a book for summer reading. Over the course of the next couple of weeks, students will hear more about this process from their Social Studies teachers, Advisors, and the SHS Librarian. Students will sign up through their Social Studies classes, and will have the option to provide an email address so that the teacher leading their discussion in the fall can connect with them over the summer. Please review the attached list, or visit our link at GoodReads.com to find out more about the choices offered to your child.

SHS Summer Reading List on GoodReads

The Souhegan Reads! Summer Reading Book List presents students with choices that meet standards of both quality and popularity. The list is generated from trusted review sources and respected educational and literary organizations; additionally, the books are read by at least one member of the SHS Summer Reading Committee and by student reviewers. Books written specifically for young adults are marked as such to help facilitate selection.

Our students all have different emotional and intellectual needs. They come to us with different interests, and different life experiences. Our student body includes eager readers and reluctant readers, alike. For this reason, we’ve created one reading list, grades 9-12. Some of the books on the list are geared toward younger readers, while others have more mature themes and language. Books geared toward young adult readers are marked with an *asterisk. Adult books are unmarked, or labeled with the term mature. Research strongly supports giving students choice in reading material as an important aspect of building adolescent literacy. Our list includes something for everyone.

Selecting a good book to read and participating in a rich “book group” discussion are two authentic adult experiences that we seek to model for our students. We encourage you to select a book or two and read along with your child! The Toadstool Bookshop in Milford has graciously agreed to offer a 20% discount on as many of these titles as you would like to purchase. If students prefer to borrow a summer reading book, students can check for available copies in the school library, or reserve a copy at the Amherst and Mont Vernon public libraries throughout the summer. Ebook versions of the titles on our list are an affordable option, as well. If your child has an eReader (Nook, Kindle, etc.) or a smartphone, you can read or preview copies of the books using these devices. Smartphone users can download the free Kindle, Nook, Kobo, or iBooks app, create a free account with these companies, and read the first several pages of each book for free. This is a great way to preview titles! Please note: You will have to enter credit card information if you decide topurchase ebooks through these retailers online.

Again, we encourage you to review the list, and consider reading a book of your choice along with your child this summer!
