Learn how to make a new kind of melody with Garage Band: Making Music from Trash at UNH Manchester in Manchester Friday, Jul. 12 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Learn how to turn ordinary household items into musical instruments. This fun, interactive session will teach children how to have fun with items you can find in your garage. And, as a bonus, they’ll even be able to take something home! This show is suitable for ages 3-10. The session will be led by Jamie Saucier, M.M., music educator, choral director and activities coordinator at UNH Manchester. This is a free event.
2. Patriotic shopping. Head over to the Live Free and Shop: Follow the Retail Gallery Craft Trail all day in Concord on Friday, Jul. 12. Support local businesses and shop tax free as you tour the 7 League Retail Galleries (Center Sandwich, Concord, Hanover, Littleton, Meredith, Nashua, North Conway). You'll find unique fine craft at various prices, all handmade by juried League members and fun, educational activities, including craft demonstrations, special exhibits, and raffles. 3. DIY beauty! Join the Make Your Own Cleaning & Beauty Products with Essential Oils at Amala Wellness in Goffstown on Friday, Jul. 12 from 6-8 p.m. Ayurveda teaches us that we should never put anything on our skin that we wouldn't put in our mouths. Why you ask? Our bodies were beautifully designed to detox and nourish through the pores of our skin. Cleaning products and skin care products often contain harmful toxins and preservatives that are absorbed into our blood stream. It's easy and inexpensive to make your own organic products! And you can use your favorite scents! In this 2 hour workshop, we will cover some of most useful essential oils, their cleaning and healing properties. 4. Dark hike! Head over to the Amoskeag Fishways Learning and Visitors Center in Manchester. Many creatures emerge as the sun goes down. Explore the night time world in the woods by moonlight. Group will meet at the Fishways, then travel together to the Cedar Swamp Nature Preserve. Registration is required and is $5 per family.
5. Contra! The New England Contra Dance is dancing its way to the Londonderry Senior Center on Friday, Jul. 12 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. New England Contra Dance featuring lively dance figures and music from the Celtic, Scottish, French-Canadian, English and traditions. We walk through each dance before it starts. If you'd like an introduction to the dances, there is a welcoming session at 7:30 before the dance. Great social exercise for people from 8 to 80. Family atmosphere, in an alcohol- and tobacco-free environment. No partner necessary -- come alone or with a friend, or meet a new one. Come join the fun! Bring drinking water, a snack to share if you wish, and comfortable flat clean-soled shoes to protect the floor. Wear light loose clothing -- nothing fancy. The hall is air conditioned in the summer!
