What's Happening at the Library This Week?

A look at the good times in the Amherst Town Library.

Most Popular Teen Fiction: Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. By winning the annual Hunger Games, District 12 tributes Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark have secured a life of safety and plenty for themselves and their families, but because they won by defying the rules, they unwittingly become the faces of an impending rebellion.

Bill Tyers July Art Exhibit: From mid July through August, The Friends of the Library will be exhibiting Bill Tyers' beautiful oil and pastel paintings at the Amherst Town Library. Bill resides in Milford and has studios in Wilton NH at the Riverview Mill and in Lowell MA at Western Avenue Studios. He paints contemporary portraits, figures and landscapes where drawing is the key element in his work using expressive lines to create form and spontaneity. Color is used for movement and to create space throughout his pieces.

Lighthouse Expert Visits Library: Jeremy D'Entremont, author, lighthouse historian, and founder of Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses, will present on Tuesday, July 17 at 7 p.m. He will present an overview of the history of five lighthouses: Boon Island Light, Cape Neddick 'Nubble' Light, White Island Light in the Isles of Shoals, Whaleback Light, and Portsmouth Harbor Light. Each of these locations has rich human history, with tales of hardship and heroism -- and ghosts! Jeremy's presentation will feature past and present images of the lighthouses, as well as video clips of the late Connie Small, author of The Lighthouse Keeper's Wife. Jeremy D'Entremont has been called the leading expert on New England's historic lighthouses. He is the author of nine books, including The Lighthouses of Maine and The Lighthouse Handbook: New England.
