Witches, Pop Culture and the Past

The Amherst Town Library is offering a special Halloween presentation for adults, "Witches, Pop Culture, and the Past,” on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Johnson Meeting Room of the Library. 

In 1692, 19 people were executed in Salem and hundreds imprisoned during a witch hunt still discussed today. In some venues in Salem, Mass., one can still hear the echoes of the cries of raucous spectators, “Hang her!” they shout.

Presenter Robin DeRosa, Professor of English and Women’s Studies at Plymouth State University, explains that when Salem tells its witch stories, history, tourism, and performance collide, and “truth,” both moral and macabre, vies with spooky thrills for its authentic place in history.
