Bernie Sanders' Son Trounced In NH Congressional Race

Levi Sanders, the son of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, attempted a congressional campaign in New Hampshire to replace Carol Shea-Porter.

FIRST DISTRICT, NH — Levi Sanders, the son of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, lost a bid to follow in his father's footsteps. Sanders ran as a Democrat in Tuesday's primary to replace Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter, who represents New Hampshire's First District. He struggled mightily — earning just 1,141 votes, or just under 2 percent, statewide, according to The Associated Press. Executive Councilor Chris Pappas was declared the winner in the race, which featured a crowded field of 11 candidates.

On the Republican side, Eddie Edwards won his party's nomination and will face Pappas in the general election November 6.

New Hampshire's First District is a key swing district. Shea-Porter is currently part of the state's all-woman, Democratic congressional delegation.

Levi Sanders is a resident of Claremont next to the Vermont border. He has worked as an insurance analyst and participated in some of his father's campaigns. He ran on many of his father's values and said he would focus on helping working-class people "beaten up by the system."

Bernie Sanders was largely uninvolved with his son's race and never issued an endorsement, saying in an interview he is not a proponent of political dynasties and that Levi was "on his own."
