NH Hunter Stuck In Mud For 33 Hours Rescued

NH Fish and Game said a 79-year-old man became stuck in mud up to his neck for 33 hours while trying to retrieve a duck in a swamp.

HAVERHILL, NH -- A New Hampshire hunter suffered the ordeal of a lifetime after authorities said he became stuck in mud up to his neck for 33 hours during a hunting trip in the White Mountains this week. Seventy-nine-year old Lebanon resident Alexander Samor was rescued along the Connecticut River after his family reported him missing, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game.

"Samor reported that he had entered the swamp in chest waders to retrieve a duck he had shot at around 7 AM on October 2," Fish and Game Lieutenant James Kneeland said in a statement. "He became hopelessly stuck and the more he struggled the more he sunk into the mud."

Samor did not tell his family where he was hunting but they told officers to search along the Connecticut River where he often hunts, according to Kneeland. Officers found Samor's vehicle at the Bedell Bridge boat launch in Haverhill near the river then soon found him in the swamp.

"(Samor) suffered from hypothermia and fatigue after being stuck in the mud for 33 hours and exposed to the heavy overnight rain that fell in the area," Kneeland said.

Samor was expected to survive.

"Fish and Game would like to remind all hunters and outdoor enthusiasts that leaving an itinerary with friends or family is a good habit to get in," Kneeland added.
