Woman, 2 Dogs Die During 2-Alarm Fire At A Home In Deerfield, Fire Officials Investigating

Update: Firefighters from 3 counties spent hours bringing the fire under control Monday; a resident reported hearing explosions in the area.

CONCORD, NH — A woman and two dogs died in a fire in Deerfield on Monday night.

Around 9 p.m., Deerfield firefighters were sent to 201 Nottingham Road after receiving a report of a house fire in the area. A neighbor also reported hearing explosions and then intense flames coming from the home, according to the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office. Arriving firefighters reported heavy fire coming from the left and rear of the house, and firefighters began extinguishing the fire. During their initial efforts, “firefighters received information that an adult female lived in the home,” Sean Toomey, the state fire marshal, said, but they were unable to find her.

A second alarm was called, which brought firefighters and mutual aid from three counties. Firefighters from Allenstown, Auburn, Barrington, Brentwood, Candia, Chester, Durham, East Kingston, Epping, Fremont, Lee, Northwood, Nottingham, Pembroke, Raymond, and Strafford all responded. Deerfield police Department and Raymond EMTs also assisted.

“Once the fire was knocked down,” Toomey said, “during a search of the home and debris from the fire, members of the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office located the body of an adult female on a porch.”

The victim was identified as Barbara E. Sears, 63, of Deerfield. Her cause and manner of death are pending. No other residents or firefighters were injured. Two dogs were also recovered deceased.
