Two People Seriously Injured In Head-On Crash In Londonderry: Watch

The Litchfield Road crash Saturday required extricating one victim and two medical helicopters. The victims have life-threatening injuries.

LONDONDERRY, NH — Londonderry firefighters and police received multiple calls for a head-on crash on Litchfield Road Saturday.

While en route, dispatch advised one person had ejected from a vehicle, and the other driver was heavily entrapped. Responding units requested that two additional ambulances be dispatched and to check on the availability of medical helicopters.

Londonderry Fire arrived and confirmed there were two heavily damaged vehicles, and that firefighters would be working to extricate the driver from one of the vehicles.

A landing zone was set up for Boston MedFlight and DHART medical helicopters. Two patients were transported by ambulance to the landing zone. The first helicopter that landed was Boston MedFlight. The crew from the Boston MedFlight helicopter worked on the patient inside the ambulance and then flew the person to an unknown Massachusetts hospital.

After MedFlight left the landing zone, DHART landed and worked with Londonderry firefighters in the ambulance. A decision was made that, based on the medical condition of the second victim, they would not be flown, according to the Londonderry Fire Battalion Chief Hallowell. They were rushed from the scene in a Londonderry ambulance to a local hospital.

Hallowell said both victims had multi-system trauma, and the injuries are considered serious and life-threatening.

The two vehicles appeared to collide head-on in a curve on Litchfield Road at about 3:25 p.m. Several calls had conflicting information about the number of victims, but it was verified there were only two people injured. Contrary to initial reports, no one was deceased at the scene which had originally been conveyed by a caller.

Litchfield Road is closed temporarily as investigators work at the scene. The road is closed between Kelly Road and Alexander Road.
