A New Hampshire State Police trooper shot and killed Jesse Champney, of Enfield, in Canaan Saturday during an unspecified confrontation.

CANAAN, NH — New Hampshire authorities are investigating a fatal, officer-involved shooting Christmas weekend in the town of Canaan near the White Mountains. The deceased was identified as Jesse Champney, 26, of Enfield. The shooting happened Saturday in a field by Route 4 in Canaan, according to state Attorney General Gordon MacDonald.

Authorities have not detailed the nature of the confrontation. The trooper shot Champney four times, according to an autopsy. The trooper, who has not been identified, was placed on leave and will be interviewed, per police protocol.

"Additional details ... will be provided as soon as possible while still protecting the integrity of the investigation," MacDonald said in a statement Sunday.
