28 People Evacuated on Cass and Friend Streets

High-pressure gas main break Friday morning now under control; residents able to return to their homes.

A high pressure gas main break on Cass and Friend streets on Friday morning forced the emergency evacuation of 28 city residents.

Portsmouth Fire Capt. Mike Hogan said the gas main break was reported just before 10 a.m. and firefighters responded with two engines, a ladder truck and two fire rescue ambulances.

Hogan said 28 people were evacuated as a precaution as Unitil crews worked to seal the gas main so they could make repairs. Portsmouth Police diverted traffic away from the affected area.
