City Has New Outdoor Apparel Store

Atlantis Weathergear and Cloudveil Mountain Works moves into former City and Country store on Daniel Street.

Holiday shoppers who wanted to find a new outdoor apparel store that has sailing and summer wear along with ski and winter wear will be happy to discover the new Atlantis Weathergear and Cloudveil Mountain Works store.

Owner Jen Whitmore opened the new store on Daniel Street in the former City and Country store on Dec. 14 after she purchased the space at auction, according to store employees Tyler Shephard and Katherine Hitchcock.

Shephard said customers will currently find a great selection of winter fleece, pull overs, jackets, hats and gloves in one part of the two-floor store and plenty of sailing and summer windbreakers and jersey's in the other part of the store.

Shephard explained the retailer is based in Marblehead, Mass., and was looking to expand to Portsmouth because the city has a lot in common with Marblehead. Shephard said the company also makes its own line of clothing. Right now, Shephard said the plan is to be open through Christmas week before the store closes in January so the rest of the interior renovations can take place.

He said the store will then reopen for good once those renovations are completed. So far, Shephard said they have received some great feedback from customers.

"We've had a bunch of people come in," he said. "Most of the people we've talked to have given us some really positive feedback."

Hitchcock said some of people who have come into the store said they were long-time City and Country store customers and were sad to see the former kitchen dishware, crockery and cutlery store go out of business. But many of them said they were excited to see the new store fill the space.

Shephard said they believe the store will do well because Portsmouth has a strong nautical and recreational boating community and people who like to ski and snowboard will enjoy purchasing their products before they head to the slopes in the White Mountains and Maine.

Atlantis Weathergear and Cloudveil Mountain Works is currently open on Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
