Crew Makes Progress on Bridge South Tower
With the return of better weather, Archer Western Contractors make significant headway on the new south tower.
It had been nearly a week since Archer Western Contractors crew members working on the new Memorial Bridge had seen the sun, but that hasn't stopped them from making significant progress on the new south tower.
On Thursday afternoon, crews were hard at work erecting more steel girders for the new tower on the Portsmouth side of the Piscataqua River. There were also two large crane barges to assist crew members who stood inside a bucket near the top of the tower to direct each girder into place.
Archer Western Contractors crews attached the first steel girders on Feb. 6 after they successfully floated in the south span in January. The north span is still scheduled to be floated in to the Kittery, Maine approach in mid-March. Currently, the north span is being assembled at the Port of New Hampshire the same way the south span was constructed.
