Five Things You Need to Know Today, Feb. 6
NH House to vote on proposed beer tax hike; Historic District Commission meeting at City Hall; chance of morning snow in the forecast.
1. Today's weather: The National Weather Service is calling for a chance of snow before noon with gradual sunny skies in the afternoon and a high temperature of 37 degrees. On Wednesday night, it will be mostly clear with a low around 14 degrees.
2. Beer tax hike bill vote: The New Hampshire House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on House Bill 168, the proposed beer tax increase of 10 cents per gallon, on Wednesday afternoon. and Gov. Maggie Hassan has said she would veto the bill if it ever reached her desk.
3. Historic District Commission meeting: The Portsmouth Historic District Commission is scheduled to meet at City Hall on Wednesday night at 7.

4. Prescott Park slips lottery: City officials are currently accepting applications for seasonal slip rentals on the Prescott Park docks from now until Feb. 15. There are 10 slips and a lottery is held to determine which applicants will get to use them. Application forms and seasonal rates can be accessed on the city's website.
5. AARP to offer free tax assistance: The AARP will offer Portsmouth area residents free 2012 income tax return preparation assistance at the Portsmouth Public Library through Sunday, April 14. The service will offered from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sundays. People should call 2-1-1 to make an appointment and walk-ins are also welcome.
