Five Things You Need to Know Today, Jan. 16

Fire Commission budget hearing tonight; health officials urge public to get flu vaccine; some snow and rain in the forecast.

1. Today's weather: The National Weather Service is calling for snow before 11 a.m., then rain and snow with a high temperature of 35 degrees. On Wednesday night, there will be a chance of rain and snow showers before 10 p.m. with a low temperature of 27 degrees.

2. Fire Commission budget hearing: The Portsmouth Fire Commission will hold the first public hearing on the proposed fiscal year 2014 budget at Fire Station 2 on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

4. Get a flu shot: The Portsmouth area and New Hampshire are seeing widespread flu cases and health officials are encouraging people to get the flu vaccine shot at area pharmacies or at their health care provider's offices if they have not gotten a flu shot already.

5. Nominate Portsmouth Poet Laureate: Nominations are being accepted for Portsmouth Poet Laureate from now until Feb. 15.
