Five Things You Need to Know Today, March 1

Little League sign ups happening now; Portsmouth Beer Week heads into the home stretch; more rain and snow in the forecast.

1. Today's weather: The National Weather Service is calling for some rain and snow on Friday with a high temperature of 40 degrees. On Friday night, there will be a chance for more rain and snow with a low around 29 degrees.

2. Little League sign ups: Registrations are now being accepted for Portsmouth Little League Baseball, according to the city's website. To be eligible, players must have been born between May 1, 2000 and April 30, 2006. There are four different divisions including the 7-8 year old group, 9-10 year old group, 11-12 year old group and the challenger group for disabled people. 3. Portsmouth Beer Week on tap: Portsmouth Beer Week continues through  March 4 and there are plenty of great happenings taking place at several venues throughout the downtown.

4. Need an idea for February school vacation week?: Portsmouth school kids are off this week for their annual February school vacation week and if you are starting to run out of ideas to keep them busy, take them to the Bowl-a-Rama on Lafayette Road and knock down some candle pins.

5. AARP to offer free tax assistance: The AARP will offer Portsmouth area residents free 2012 income tax return preparation assistance at the Portsmouth Public Library through Sunday, April 14. The service will offered from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sundays. People should call 2-1-1 to make an appointment and walk-ins are also welcome.
