Market Basket Wallet Thieves Held on $10K Bail

A couple who Portsmouth Police say robbed a wallet from a female shopper at Market Basket on Tuesday were ordered held on $10,000 cash bail during their arraignments at Portsmouth Circuit Court on Thursday morning.

Julia Marie Konchek, 21, of 37 Hanover St. Apt 2 in Portsmouth and Kyle J. Roy, 25, of 1 Mission Road in Gardner, Mass., are both heroin addicts, according to Portsmouth Police prosecutors. They were arrested by Portsmouth Police after Konchek allegedly stole eight DVDs from the Wal-Mart store in Newington.

Portsmouth Police Prosecutor David Colby said Portsmouth Police officers pulled over their vehicle in the city on Wednesday around 10 p.m. After police officers began searching their vehicle, Colby said the two robbery suspects fled on foot and were later arrested after they were located in the basement of a friend's house nearby.

Police say that Konchek and Roy allegedly robbed a female Market Basket shopper on Woodbury Avenue of her wallet after Konchek grabbed the shopper's purse. As the two women struggled, the purse's contents spilled out onto the floor and police say that Ray picked up the female shopper's wallet before he and Konchek fled the scene.

Konchek and Roy, who had been living together first at 21 Brewster Street in the Brewster Street boarding house and then on Hanover Street, were scheduled to have video arraignments. But after the court experienced some technical difficulties and could make make a video connection with the Rockingham County Jail in Brentwood, they were arraigned by speaker phone instead.

Konchek was arraigned on a felony robbery charge stemming from the Market Basket case and a misdemeanor theft charge for allegedly stealing the DVDs at Wal-Mart in Newington on Feb. 20.

"I've only not been working for two weeks," said Konchek via speaker phone. "I moved out here to get away from the drugs."

Konchek, who is a self-described lingerie and bikini model on the website, exploretalent.com, fought back her tears as she pleaded with Judge Sawato Gardner to allow her to repair her life. "I just really want to get my life clean and I'm just so embarrassed."

Colby requested $10,000 cash bail for Konchek as well as no contact with the Market Basket robbery victim, Roy, or Market Basket or Wal-Mart. Gardner granted that request.

Portsmouth Police Prosecutor Rena Dilando requested the same bail conditions for Roy, 25, who was arraigned on a felony robbery charge, citing his prior conviction in Massachusetts for driving while intoxicated and the fact that he and Konchek tried to flee from police after they stopped their car.

"He's a danger to himself and to others," said Dilando, who also said Roy has struggled with heroin addiction and is currently not working.

Roy told the court that he does have a job and a place to live at his friend's house on Blue Heron Street. But Gardner ordered that he also be held on $10,000 cash only bail and that he have no contact with the Market Basket robbery victim, Konchek, or Market Basket. She also ordered that he and Konchek not use any drugs or alcohol, not possess weapons, ammunition or any explosive devices and that both of them would have to submit to a source of funds hearing if they posted the $10,000 cash bail.

Roy and Konchek are scheduled to return to Portsmouth Circuit Court for probable cause hearings on March 5 at 8:30 a.m.
