Middleton Man Charged with DWI After Car Crash

State Police say driver tried to flee the area after his car caught on fire on Route 16.

State Police arrested a Middleton man for drunken driving after he crashed his car on the Spaulding Turnpike and tried to flee the scene.

Richard Davis, 62, of Middleton was charged with driving while intoxicated following the car crash that happened on Wednesday night before 7 p.m., according to State Police. The crash occurred on Route 16 northbound between the Portsmouth Traffic Circle and Rockingham Avenue.

The Ford Mustang that Davis operated was reportedly on fire and witnesses told State Police they saw Davis fleeing the scene. Police located Davis in a wooded area near Rockingham Avenue and arrested him for driving while intoxicated, according to State Police.

The Portsmouth Police Department and Portsmouth Fire Department assisted State Police at the scene. Trooper Goodwin of Troop A-Barrack in Epping is conducting the investigation.
