NH Fishermen Get More Bad News

New England Fishery Management Council to drastically reduce catch limits for cod in 2013.

New Hampshire commercial fishermen received some unwelcome news on Wednesday after fishing regulators decided to further decrease catch limits for cod in Georges Bank and the Gulf of Maine, a move that some fishermen believe will decimate their industry.

WMUR reported Wednesday the New England Fishery Management Council moved to reduce catch limits by 61 percent, or 1,249 metric tons, in Georges Bank off Cape Cod and by 81 percent, or 5,103 metric tons, in the Gulf of Maine during the group's meeting in Portsmouth. Some fishermen also told WMUR the new cod catch limits will make it harder for them to fish for haddock and pollock because those ground fish are located at the same depth as cod.
