NH Sierra Club Endorses Shea Porter

Group makes announcement with Democratic First Congressional District Carol Shea Porter at Odiorne State Park in Rye.

Today, the New Hampshire Sierra Club announced its endorsement of Carol Shea Porter in the election for the First Congressional District at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye, New Hampshire

“The Sierra Club is confident that Carol will be a champion in the fight to protect the health and well-being of New Hampshire families,” said Jim Allmendinger, Strafford resident and Chapter Political Committee Co-Chair. “From protecting the air we breathe and the water we drink, to guaranteeing that the natural beauty of the Granite State isn’t sold for a quick buck, to creating good-paying clean energy jobs, Carol Shea Porter stands with New Hampshire first.”

Carol Shea Porter represented New Hampshire District from 2007 until 2011 and voted for the interests of our residents by supporting energy efficiency programs and strengthening clean air standards that protect children’s health. She put people over profits and supported proposals that would make America stronger for future generations.

“I am honored to once again have the endorsement of the Sierra Club,” said Carol Shea-Porter.  “Climate change threatens our environment, our economy, and our national security.  In Congress, I'll work to protect the environment, support the Clean Air and Water Acts, and ensure a clean energy future.”

“During the last two years without Carol working for us in Congress, we witnessed Congressional attempts to dismantle the Clean Air Act, defund the Environmental Protection Agency and ideological gridlock with Congressman Frank Guinta sitting in the front row cheering for the Tea Party agenda. For too long, the incumbent has taken the Tea Party line siding with the industrial polluters and misrepresented the Granite State in Congress. Over and over again, Mr. Guinta rejected the Granite State legacy for clean air and clean water protections for our state, at the so-called “end of the tailpipe” of America.

“Mr. Guinta’s abandonment of New Hampshire’s values can be seen in his votes in support of the Transparency in Regulatory Analysis of Impacts on the Nation Act (TRAIN Act). The TRAIN Act allowed the full repeal of the Cross State Air Pollution Rule and the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards – both programs that have had historic and bipartisan support in New Hampshire. In 2011, Mr. Guinta supported the bill to end these programs and then he voted again to kill the programs in 2012[1].

"Carol Shea Porter showed inspirational leadership by supporting energy efficiency programs that would help many New Hampshire homeowners and local businesses when she was in office, among other things", said Allmendinger. "She is exactly the kind of leader we need in Washington to protect our environment, stand for New Hampshire’s values and create an economy that works for all families.”

Sierra Club will mobilize its members nationwide to support endorsed candidates.

"Carol Shea Porter has proven that she is willing to reject the ploys of big polluters and fight to protect our environment and the health of American families," said Sierra Club President Robin Mann. "The Sierra Club will proudly mobilize our members to elect Carol back in Congress.”
