PNSY: Facing a Base Closure Round in 2017?
The NH and Maine delegations have joined forces to oppose past BRAC rounds.
Could Portsmouth Naval Shipyard have to face a base closure round in 2017?
The White House has a request for a Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) round that year, which U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-NH, is opposing on the grounds of national security and economic security for New Hampshire.
Shaheen, while chair of the Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness and Management Support on April 2, questioned the savings potential of another BRAC round when considering the last round's cost-effectiveness. She said the 2005 round exceeded initial cost estimates by $14 billion.
"Our national security, our shipyard, and our economy in New Hampshire would suffer if we had another round of base closures at this time," Shaheen said in a press release.
