Workers with Insurcomm were busy on Wednesday morning cleaning the water and smoke damage inside the Portsmouth Police Station following Tuesday's fire.
City Manager John Bohenko said City Hall and the police station are open as usual following the two-alarm blaze that damaged the shooting range room.
Bohenko said an insurance adjuster was scheduled to review the damage caused by the fire to give the city an estimate.
WMUR reported the fire started after a round of ammunition was fired and ignited the rubber casing in the wall, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Deputy Portsmouth Fire Chief Carl Roediger said the back stop in the shooting range room will have to be replaced. He said there is also extensive smoke and water damage and some smoke and water damage in the police locker rooms.
Roediger said firefighters were able to make a quick stop on the fire because two sprinkler systems activated in the shooting range room.
He said firefighters from Greenland, Rye,. Dover, Hampton and Kittery, Maine responded to the scene while firefighters from New Castle, Exeter, Newington, North Hampton and the Pease Fire Department provided station coverage.
Bohenko said the city fully expects its insurance coverage will pay for the damage and that the City Council will not have to appropriate any money for the project.
