Portsmouth 9/11 Ceremony This Week At Memorial

Portsmouth officials will hold a 9/11 ceremony at Portsmouth City Hall to honor the victims of the terrorist attacks.

PORTSMOUTH, NH — Portsmouth's annual 9/11 memorial ceremony will be held Tuesday morning at City Hall. The ceremony starts at 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane hit the World Trade Center in New York City September 11, 2001. Officials will specifically honor Tom McGuinness, a Portsmouth resident who was aboard that first plane.

"Everyone is encouraged to take a few minutes ... and acknowledge the loss to the country and the victim’s families," Portsmouth officials said in a statement. "Mark the day, and remember."

Portsmouth Police Chief Robert Merner, who was at Ground Zero in New York within hours of the attack when he worked as a police officer in Boston, Massachusetts, will speak at the ceremony.

The ceremony will be held by the city's 9/11 memorial site — a piece of steel from the World Trade Center.

"You are encouraged to bring a flower or bouquet of any type to lay at the foot of the 9/11 Steel Artifact as a visible reminder of your attendance to honor their memory," officials added.
