Portsmouth Democrats Rejoice

Democratic candidates won several national, state and local races on Election Night.

Portsmouth Democrats knew they had a good chance of doing well on Election night, but the overall results surpased even their expectations.

For starters, President Barack Obama won his re-election campaign after he defeated Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Portsmouth's unofficial election results at the polls showed that city voters did their part by giving the president a strong victory in the city.

Unofficial election results also showed that Portsmouth voters supported Maggie Hassan who was also elected New Hampshire Governor after she defeated Republican Ovide Lamontagne. But the good news for Democrats didn't stop there. New Hampshire and Portsmouth voters also supported Carol Shea-Porter's bid to regain the First Congressional District seat she lost to U.S. Rep. Frank Guinta, R-NH, in 2010. Shea-Porter was declared the winner of a very close race on early Wednesday morning.

City Democrats captured all six New Hampshire House seats, including the two new floterial districts, according to unofficial election results. This means Portsmouth will once again be represented in Concord by an all Democratic delegation.

Voter turnout throughout Election Day was very strong. Ward officials reported numbers that achieved a 90 percent overall turnout, which was higher than in 2008.
