PSNH Seeks City Approval for New Substation
The proposal is scheduled to go before the Board of Adjustment on Tuesday night.
Public Service of New Hampshire's proposal to build a new substation on the Route 1 Bypass is set to go before the Board of Adjustment on Tuesday night.
PSNH and the property's owner, Searay Realty LLC are proposing to build the electrical substation at 445 US Route 1 Bypass. Before doing that, they need variances to allow for the construction of an electrical station and from setback requirements.
"They're looking to construct a new electrical substation to provide service to the general Portsmouth area," said Juliet Walker, transportation planner for the city and staff liaison to the Board of Adjustment. "It's not really a structure. There's not a substantial building component to it."
She said PSNH will demolish the existing commercial building on the site, and buffer the substation from the road and neighboring areas.
Even if the variances are granted by the Board of Adjustment, Walker said PSNH will still have to go through site plan review with the Planning Board.
The Board of Adjustment meets at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at Portsmouth City Hall.
