Thousands Prepare to Honor Officer Arkell

Men and women of law enforcement assembled to honor one of their own May 20.

Thousands of police officers are preparing to honor slain Brentwood Police Officer Steve Arkell, starting with a public safety walk-through at Exeter High School Tuesday evening.

In solemn procession lines, men and women from various law enforcement agencies began to pay their respects outside the high school.

Gov. Maggie Hassan, who lives in Exeter, met privately with some officers and conducted an official review of officers.

The Public Memorial Service for Officer Arkell is Wednesday, May 21, at 11 a.m. at Exeter High School.

Public calling hours are Thursday, May 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Stockbridge Funeral Home at 141 Epping Road in Exeter.

Police officers for the walk-through came from all around New England, and beyond. John Burtis, a retired officer of the Los Angeles Police Department now living in Derry, N.H., said he was there representing his colleagues from LAPD.

"It's important because we're all united. We're all in the same family," Burtis said.
