Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion is Family Oasis
This Portsmouth state park offers families a quiet place to explore history and picnic away from downtown's hustle and bustle
New Hampshire's Royal Gov. Benning Wentworth enjoyed a $1 million view of the Sagamore Creek waterway when he lived in what is now known as the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion off Little Harbor Road in the 18th century.
Today, Portsmouth area families and visitors can enjoy the same view at the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion and tour the historic property.
Wentworth served as governor here from 1741-1766 and conducted all of his official business within the 40-room house. Tours are conducted from Wednesday through Sunday between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. that allows visitors to see all of the home's rooms and secret passage ways. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and there is no charge to come and walk the grounds.

Kayakers can also use the boat launch to access Sagamore Creek, which is a tributary of the Piscataqua River and Portsmouth Harbor. There are also some islands just off shore and a view of New Castle.
There is no charge for families who want to come here and picnic, walk the grounds and get some quiet, relaxing downtime when they need a break from the hustle and bustle of downtown Portsmouth's tourism scene.

Big sigh for my fellow dog owners out there: no dogs allowed on the property.
