Record-Breaking Temps Reported As 1st Heat Wave Of The Year Cooks NJ

New high temperatures have been set in the Garden State Monday as a heat wave blasts the area.

The Garden State's first heat wave of the year has already broken temperature records as of Monday, forecasters say.

The weather monitoring station at Newark Liberty International Airport hit 101 degrees Monday, breaking the previous record high of 99, which was set on this date last year in 2024, according to the National Weather Service.

And record-breaking is happening at the Jersey Shore as well, meaning even beachgoers are struggling to find relief from the heat. The Atlantic City Marina hit 93 degrees as of 11:15 a.m. Monday, the National Weather Service said. That was the first time 90 degrees was hit there since July 14, 2022 when the high was 90 degrees, and the hottest temperature since July 20, 2020, when the high was 93 degrees, forecasters said.

Extreme heat warnings have expanded to include all of New Jersey except for the immediate coast, the National Weather Service said Monday afternoon. The warning lasts until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The Jersey Shore remains under a heat advisory until 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Monday will see the highest humidity of the heat wave, according to the National Weather Service, though Tuesday will have slightly warmer temperatures. And there will be little relief - the sea breeze will only be strong enough for the immediate coast, and temperatures will remain high even overnight.

National Weather Service forecasters predict that the heat may generate the hottest temperatures seen in more than a decade, particularly in the Delaware Valley, Lehigh Valley and North Jersey regions.

Temperatures remain high through the mid-week, and occasional showers and thunderstorms are not out of the question, though they too will offer little relief from the heat.

It is important to take precautions during this heat wave, especially for those who are working outside. According to Scientific American, extreme heat is the number one weather-related cause of death in the U.S. It kills more than hurricanes, floods and tornadoes combined most years.

"Heat tends to have cumulative effects on the body and we are currently forecasting several consecutive afternoons of 95+ with little relief during the nighttime hours thanks to lows in the upper 70s to around 80," the National Weather Service said. "Take frequent breaks if outside, and drink plenty of fluids."

Thursday and Friday will see an increasing chance of showers and thunderstorms. But the good news is that seasonable highs in the 80s should be returning and heat advisories/warnings will no longer be necessary.
