Star-Ledger, 4 Other NJ Newspapers To Cease Print Publication In 2025
The newspaper's owners said declining circulation, rising costs, and a reduced demand for print publications led them to this decision.

NEW JERSEY — The Star-Ledger will stop printing newspapers next February after almost 200 years in publication, its leaders announced Thursday.
The Newark Morning Ledger Co., which owns the newspaper, said declining circulation, rising costs, and a reduced demand for print publications led them to this decision.
Advance Local, which owns NJ Advance Media and NJ.com, will also stop printing The Times of Trenton and the South Jersey Times, which are both daily papers, as well as the weekly Hunterdon County Democrat. The final daily editions will be published on Feb. 2, 2025, and the last Hunterdon County Democrat will be published on Jan. 30.

NJ Advance Media President Steve Alessi said that stopping print publication will allow the company to focus resources on strengthening the existing newsroom.
“It’s important to emphasize that this is a forward-looking decision that allows us to invest more deeply than ever in our journalism and in serving our communities," he said.
The newspaper has undergone several name changes since it was first published in 1832 as the Newark Daily Advertiser. In 2005, the Star-Ledger won the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting, for its coverage of former Gov. Jim McGreevey's resignation.
