Thunderstorms, High Temps In NJ Tuesday Forecast

High temperatures are set to heat up New Jersey again Tuesday, bringing with it isolated afternoon thunderstorms to parts of the state.

NEW JERSEY - High temperatures are set to heat up New Jersey again Tuesday, bringing with it isolated afternoon thunderstorms in parts of the state, forecasters said.

A “broken line” of showers and thunderstorms will kick off the morning, slowly moving off the shore of southern New Jersey by daybreak, with patchy fog possible in areas that saw rain overnight. However, the main weather event of Tuesday will be a cold front moving eastward through the state Tuesday afternoon after 3 p.m., per the National Weather Service, with a chance of thunderstorms mostly along and east of I-95 in the cards.

“This makes for a rather low-predictability forecast where not everyone will see rain, and those that do will only see brief downpours with up to a quarter inch of rain, but confidence is too low to broad- brush accumulating rainfall over large areas,” forecasters from the National Weather Service Mount Holly station said in a discussion Tuesday morning.

Temperatures are set to hover around the low-90s on Tuesday, with slightly warmer temperatures focused around the I-95 corridor, the National Weather Service added. In fact, Tuesday marks a return to even hotter temperatures, as the 90-degree-and-up streak will continue this week with a high near 90 on Wednesday and a high near 93 on Friday, forecasters said.

The hottest day of the week appears to be Thursday, according to the National Weather Service, where "oppressive" temperatures in the 90s could feel much hotter, possibly warranting a heat advisory.

A combination of high temperatures and dew points will result in “dangerously high heat indices” on Thursday up to 104 degrees, the National Weather Service said Tuesday, adding that nighttime muggy conditions won’t provide much relief.

The surge of very hot air this week could actually prove to be the hottest weather of the year, AccuWeather meteorologists said. The service predicts afternoon temperatures 10 to 15 degrees above normal with increased risk of heat-related illness and challenged daily records.

The silver lining: the heat will wane heading into the weekend, as Saturday will see temperatures once again dip back into the 80s.
