Winter Weather Advisory Issued In Parts Of NJ

Freezing rain, sleet and several tenths of an inch of ice are expected to impact Friday morning's commute. Power outages are also possible.

NEW JERSEY - Over 200 flights have been canceled in New Jersey amid a major storm moving across the country, which is expected to bring freezing rain, sleet and up to four tenths of an inch of ice to the state through Friday.

Six Garden State counties were issued a winter weather advisory effective through Friday evening, per the National Weather Service. Freezing rain in some areas of North Jersey, alongside ice accumulation, could make power outages and hazardous road conditions possible. The counties under the advisory are:

  • Sussex
  • Warren
  • Morris
  • Passaic
  • Bergen
  • Essex

Moderate to locally heavy rain Thursday, coupled with rapid snow melt and between 1 and 2 inches of additional rainfall on Friday will also result in localized flooding, the National Weather Service said. Also, any standing water on roads is likely to freeze as temperatures fall to below freezing Friday night.

In the northwestern region of the state, freezing rain is expected to change over to snow and sleet with minimal accumulation. Sussex County alone is anticipated to see up to .4 inches of freezing rain.

“Be prepared for slippery conditions on area roads and walkways. Postpone travel if possible,” the National Weather Service said.

“The freezing rain is forecast to transition to sleet and snow before ending late on Friday afternoon. Little snow accumulation is expected.”

And while freezing rain should arrive in central New Jersey on Friday morning, forecasters are still uncertain when slush will hit the northwest and southeastward portions of the state.

Temperatures may not fall below freezing there until late Friday afternoon as the back edge of the precipitation begins to move off the coast,” the National Weather Service said.

Most of the Garden State is also under a dense fog advisory Thursday through 1 p.m., the weather agency said.
